As OTT services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu provide an ever-expanding library of films and TV shows, consumers are opting to cut the cord and instead consume TV shows and films on their television using Digital Media Players.

Popular Digital Media Players include Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Google Chromecast and Apple TV. Digital media players provide an interface through which users may choose from multiple apps - Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and YouTube among others.

Digital Media Players do not necessarily preclude having a cable connection - consumers can choose to keep their cable bundle to continue access to Linear Cable TV, while also having a Digital Media Player to stream content over the internet. At the same time cable providers such as Comcast also offer a combined Digital Media player as part of the Cable set-top, such as Comcast’s Xfinity X1.

All major OTT services are supported across most other media players. A major part of the rise of Netflix in the US is their integration with different digital media players, which accelerated Netflix adoption by over 50 million subscriber households in the US alone.

Also popular as digital media player devices are “Kodi” boxes. These digital media players use the Kodi open source software, to which all streaming apps can be installed as addons.
