Storyboarding

Storyboarding is the process of graphically laying out the structure of a video on a shot-by-shot basis.

Storyboarding is one of the first steps involved in creating any kind of video. A storyboard is essentially a visual sketch for how the final video should look, and is a very important first step towards establishing a common vision within the video production team.

The storyboard for the whiteboard video would have to have a rough outline of what content is to be shown on the whiteboard at different stages in the video. For instance, the storyboard has to map out when the video lecture would be focused on the whiteboard lecture, and when it would switch to screencasts and to computer-based graphics. The storyboard, for an educational video, should also specify the concepts/ examples being discussed at different points of the video.

The storyboard is essentially the first step towards giving the idea for the video a concrete shape. The storyboard should be comprehensive enough to give a structure to the video that the entire production team would be able to follow along, and yet flexible enough to accommodate changes as the production process requires. A well-executed storyboarding process is therefore quite vital to proper communication within the production team and helps reduce the time that it takes to convert the idea to a final video.

By creating a structure according to which the video is to be created, storyboarding helps the production team break down the task of creating the video into subproblems. The team can then improve each of the various elements that go towards creating the video - lighting and camera angles, communicating with subject matter experts and with video experts to create the most accurate and engaging learning content, finding the best graphics to supplement the whiteboard lecture parts of the video, the optimal
