What are Pixels (p) – 1080 / 720 / 480 / 360 / 240 p

Pixels as a quality index essentially mean the height of the video in the number of pixels. Thus, a video quality of 1080p means – the height of the video is 1080 pixels. Now the next question is what is the width of the video? There is no exact technically right answer but in common convention, the video is 16:9 for online playback. Thus the width of the video becomes 1080*16/9 – 1920 pixels.

So, in common convention 1080p means 1080 pixels as the height of the video and 1920 as the width of the video. Similarly, 480 p will mean 480 pixels in height and 480*16/9 -853 pixels as the width of the video. However this may vary if the aspect ratio of video is different (like 4:3). So, until you know the video aspect ratio, you can’t determine the exact number of pixels in a video.

Does pixel directly correspond to a size? What will be the size of 1 hour,1080 p video?

Surprisingly there is no fixed answer to that. If pixel quality is fixed, then the number of pixels in a video is fixed. E.g a 1080 p will have 1080*1920 = 2073600 pixels. But how much data is captured in the video, is not determined by number of pixels exactly. Thus, Youtube , Vimeo and Vdocipher can provide different size of videos for the same length and same pixel quality. It is even possible that say 1 hour, 1080p video of vdocipher is of lower size than 720 p of Vimeo.

So, the next obvious question is what exactly determines the video size? It is video bitrate (generally represented by kbps like 1500 kbps etc). Please read the next section to understand bitrate as a quality index.

There can be high-resolution videos with low bitrate and low resolution videos at very high video bitrate . This imbalance is because of some complicated maths that is used to express what to display on a video with least amount of file size. These maths can force the bitrate for a video at any arbitrary small value while compromising on the quality.

What bitrate/pixels does VdoCipher use for HD streaming?

If you are looking to stream your content along with DRM, chances are that you’re bound to come across Shaka player. As an open-source JS library, the Shaka player is widely used for adaptive video streaming. You can play content based on DASH and HLS, without browser plugins, with the help of an Encrypted media extension. So, in order to help others out and make it easier for others to learn about using Shaka player for DRM playback, I wrote this article.

So, without further ado, let’s get started.

What is Encrypted Media Extension (EME)

DRM playback is based on the Encrypted Media Extension Technology, which is the standard of W3C to provide DRM playback support in web browsers.

EME can be majorly divided into two parts:

EME API:

These APIs are the part of the browser API as the standard of W3C to securely communicate between the Video Element and CDM (Content Decryption Module) where actual decoding of media happens

Content Decryption Module:

CDM is a proprietary software/hardware of DRM service provider that can be bundled in the browser/OS or added as hardware in the client machine, it’s the main purpose is to decode the video in a secure executing environment without exposing it to the user and rendering media directly on the video element.

Here’s a brief block diagram of EME Tech in Vdophiper Player and Playback.

Shaka player implementation for DRM

Both DRM service providers, Apple Fairplay DRM and Google Widevine DRM provide CDM in Safari and Chrome browsers respectively.

For video playback, Apple expects developers to consume EME API and provide playback on the video element, but google Widevine goes one step ahead and also provides JS video Player name Shaka Player that provides full basic playback using EME API and Video Element.

Shaka player will request https://your.authentication.server/,to get the License Certificate, 
Shaka Player is a key-system-agnostic, it uses EME to ask the browser what its key-system is supported, and make no assumptions. If your browser supports multiple key systems, the first supported key system in the manifest is used

Handling License Server Authentication

Your application’s license server may require some form of authentication so that it only delivers licenses to paying users, 

but for that you need to add header/token/parameter with each request to identify the user, you can do so by interrupting the request for  License Certificate, and send them the License Certificate only if it passed the authorization criteria. 

To interrupt the License Certificate request we will use the `getNetworkEngine` Method

Shaka players also support Apple FairPlay DRM, Implementing the FairPlay the follow same above three-step paradigm as implementing the Widevine.

First step remains the same in both, it just the DRM configuration and handling the request changes while implementing the FairPlay

Digital storage of any media requires conversion from analog to digital format. The initial digital format after media production is still a raw file. For it to be stored and accessed across different devices, it needs to be compressed in a particular digital format compatible across the device. This form of video compression for files to make them compatible with a target device is called encoding.

The terms video encoding and video transcoding are sometimes used interchangeably, in spite of the use-case difference between the two.

What is Transcoding?

Transcoding is the process of converting a video from one format to another. In video transcoding,  a video file is decoded from its original format to an uncompressed format and then it is encoded into the desired format. Videos is transcoded to make sure that video file can be played on various devices, like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, and on different web browsers and media players. Also, video transcoding can reduce the file size, making it easier and faster to download or stream videos online, to ensure that video can be played seamlessly on lower internet bandwidth.

How Does Video Transcoding Differ From Encoding?

Encoding:

In encoding raw video is converted into a compressed, digital format.

The main goal of encoding is to compress raw video or audio content to make it easier to store and stream. It involves compressing large raw files (like those from a video camera) into a format that’s more manageable and suitable for streaming or storing, like MP4 or MP3.

During encoding, the original file is compressed to reduce its size. This involves removing some data, ideally in a way that doesn’t noticeably reduce quality. Encoding is typically the first step in preparing raw media content for broadcast, streaming, or storage.

Transcoding:

In Transcoding, the video file is converted from one format to another.

The main purpose of transcoding is to make media files compatible with different devices and bandwidths. It’s about changing the format to suit different needs, like playing on a smartphone versus a TV.

In transcoding, the file is first decoded (uncompressed), and then re-encoded into the new format. This process can also involve changing other properties of the file, like its resolution or bit rate.

Transcoding is used when there’s a need to distribute the same content in different formats for different platforms or devices.

In simpler terms, think of encoding as translating a story from your thoughts into a written book, while transcoding is like taking that book and translating it into different languages for different readers. Encoding is about initial creation, and transcoding is about adapting to different needs after the fact.

Generally speaking, encoding refers to the process of converting uncompressed data to the desired format. This is understood to be a lossy process. On the other hand, video transcoding is the process of decoding a video file from one format to an uncompressed format and then encoding the uncompressed data to the desired format. Video transcoding is commonly used when the video file is being moved from a source to a different destination, and when the two support different file formats.

One of the most important uses of video transcoding is in uploading video from one source – a desktop, to an online video hosting site, so that the format is supported by the video hosting site.

Some other terminologies in use regarding video transcoding and encoding are:

  • Transmuxing – Conversion to a different container format without changing the file itself
  • Transrating – Conversion to a different video bitrate using the same file format

What are the Different Types of  Video Transcoding?

1. From Not-So-Good Quality to Even Lower Quality (Lossy to Lossy)

Imagine you have a video that’s already not the best quality because it’s been squeezed to make it smaller. This type of transcoding takes that not-so-great video and squeezes it even more. The quality drops further, but the video becomes really small, which is handy if you want to watch it on your phone or tablet without using much space.

2. From Good Quality to Same Good Quality (Lossless to Lossless)

Now, think about a video that’s been made smaller without losing any of its goodness. When you transcode this type, the quality stays great. The catch? The video files are still pretty big, so they might not be the best for watching on smaller devices. You’ll also need a pretty good computer to handle this kind of transcoding.

3. From Good Quality to Not-So-Good Quality (Lossless to Lossy)

This is a middle ground. You start with a high-quality video and make it smaller, so the quality drops a bit, but not as much as the first type. The files are small enough to be convenient for your phone or tablet. Remember, once you lose some of that quality, you can’t get it back – it’s like throwing away parts of a picture, you can’t just stick them back on later.

What is a Video Codec?

A video codec is any device/software that compresses a video file. A device/software that only compresses an analog file is called an encoder, whereas a device/software that only decompresses a compressed digital file to analog is a decoder. The term ‘codec’ comes out of the concatenation of the two terms encoding and decoding.

How do Video Codecs work?

For any video codec to work it needs to compress the frames. There are two types of frame compressions – inter-frame and intra-frame compression. An intra-frame compression, each frame is compressed independently of the adjacent frames. It is therefore essentially image-compression applied to video.

Inter-frame compression on the other hand identifies redundancies across frames to compress videos. This includes any elements of the moving image that may be static – say a static background in a talking head video. Inter-frame compression is much more efficient than intra-frame compression, and so most codecs are optimized to identify redundancies across frames.

What are some of the most prominent video codecs?

MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) is the most common family of video codecs. International Standards Organization (ISO), whose standards impact the computer and consumer electronics markets has had at the following list of codecs as its standards:

  • MPEG-1 in 1993
  • MPEG-2 in 1994
  • MPEG-4 in 1999
  • AVC/H.264 in 2002

H.264 is the most prevalent compression standard in use currently. For a period in the late 90s and early 2000s, the rivalry between RealNetworks and Microsoft was around creating their own proprietary formats as the standards for codecs. RealNetwork’s RealVideo, Microsoft’s Windows Media Video, ON2’s VP6 and Sorenson Video 3 were the dominant proprietary codecs. The H.264 codec was added to Apple’s QuickTime 7 in 2005, and in 2007 added H.264 support for Flash.

VP9 is the proprietary video compression format and codec developed by ON2 Technologies, which were acquired by Google in 2010. VP9 is available under new BSD License by Google with source code available as libvpx VP9 codec SDK. 

Theora is a free lossy video compression format, distributed without licensing fees. Theora is derived from VP3 codec, which has been released into the public domain. Ogg Video Container format uses Theora as its compression format.

How is a media file format distinct from a video codec?

A file format is a container, inside which is the data that has been compressed by a video codec. A single file format may support multiple video codecs. For example the Audio Video Interleaved (AVI) file format contains data that compressed from any of a range of codecs.

What are some of the most prominent video containers?

MP4 is the most popular container format used for storing digital audio and video. Both QuickTime and MP4 file formats use the same MPEG-4 format.

WebM is the royalty-free container format, sponsored by Google. WebM uses the VP8 and VP9 codecs as compression formats.

There are many datasets provided by huge commercial companies but they aren’t completely useful and can often be at odds with one another based on methodology.

  • A study was conducted by “The European Intellectual Property Office(EUIPO)” regarding the impact of piracy across member states. The numbers showed that approx 13.7 million users are accessing illegal pirate services around the European countries.
  • The study also showed that the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain constituted the highest percentages of offending viewers within their populations, with 8.9%, 8.5%, and 6.9% respectively(the EU average is 3.6%).
  • The United Kingdom(2.4 million), France(2.3 million), and Spain(2.2 million) have the largest populations when it comes to using illegal services on a regular basis.
  • The picture is yet to be clear in North America. A study by Sandvine showed that around 6.5% of households were regularly communicating with pirate sites. Meanwhile, a report by  Park Associates identified that more than 14.1 million U.S. households accessed pirated videos in 2019, which is approximately 16% of the total pay TV market.
  • A study conducted by the University of Amsterdam in 2017 showed the piracy habits across Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. Both the Indonesian and Thai populations showed a very high usage of pirated content, with the study estimating between 65% and 54% of their internet populations. Hong Kong registered 27% of their internet population while Japan registered 12% of their internet population (11% of the total population).
  • The results were confirmed by the Asia Video Industry Association in 2019 based on the consumer survey report and it was identified that 24% of consumers in Hong kong use internet streaming devices for accessing pirated channels. This number increased to 28% of consumers in the Philippines, 34% in Taiwan, and 45% in Thailand.

From the above-mentioned studies and reports, it can be clearly seen and concluded that video piracy and in particular, TV or Movie piracy, still remains a serious issue globally.

What is the Impact of piracy? 

Various studies have shown that by 2022 the estimated losses to the industry would be as high as $52 billion globally (Digital TV Research 2017) along with massive GDP losses. Talking about The United States only, the GDP losses due to piracy have been estimated between $47 billion and $115 billion (Blackburn et al, 2019).

With a lot of research and studies now available, we are getting to understand the wider impact of this video piracy problem. The American movie and TV production and distribution industry support over 2.6 million jobs, and in 2017 alone, it generated $229 billion in revenue. A report by Blackburn, Eisenach, and Harrison on the impact of movie piracy on the U.S. economy, estimated that in 2017 between 230,000 and 560,000 jobs were lost in the U.S. as a direct result of pirating activity.

Pirated videos now get more than 230 billion views every year, with the majority coming outside from the US. The highest demand is for pirated TV episodes with over 12.8 billion views in the U.S. and 170.6 billion views outside. There are 26.6 billion illegal online viewings of U.S. produced movies and 126.7 billion viewings of American TV shows annually.

Torrent search engines like PirateBay have a wide portfolio of pirated content from Netflix and other streaming platforms and then serves it to approx 59 million pirates online. How Netflix is Tackling Piracy related to Account Sharing?

You’d have noticed that a lot of times videos on Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney plus are not at full resolution (1080p or 4K) on certain Android devices or Chrome browsers. What is Widevine DRM?

Widevine DRM is a widely used DRM licensing and encryption technology owned and maintained by Google. It protects your videos from being downloaded illegally on browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It also protects content on devices such as  Android devices, Android TV, and Chromecast. Widevine DRM is compatible with streaming by MPEG Dash and HLS.

History Of Widevine DRM

Originally Widevine was a separate company from Google working on securing online videos on its own, till it was acquired by  Google.

Widevine technologies initially worked on digital rights management software which replaced smart cards based content security. This changed a lot of things as the cost of the card was removed along with the overall logistics involved with the distribution of the card. 

In 2010 Widevine was purchased by Google, in order to improve their support for media and entertainment video platforms. This further helped them speed up DRM encrypted video streaming on android with the help of adaptive streaming

Widevine has two different versions, i.e. classic and modular. 

Widevine Classic

Widevine Classic is the older version and it is only currently available for legacy devices such as older Android devices and smart TVs. It required that the content is in their proprietary .wvm format. The support for classic has now stopped as the latest devices only use the modular version of Widevine. 

Widevine Modular

Widevine Modular is the current version of Widevine, which is being widely used by all the Chromium-based browsers (but not Chromium) and Android-based devices. It supports the video streaming protocols such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, as well as  CMAF, CENC, and HTML5 standards such as EME(Encrypted Media Extensions) & MSE.

A Refresher On Widevine DRM

If you are someone who isn’t really clear on what DRM is, I’ll briefly explain to you what exactly DRM is and how it works. Otherwise, you can just jump on to the next section using this link. 

DRM or Digital Rights Management is a way to protect your content from any unauthorized use. You can set restrictions on the use of your video so that you have complete control over who accesses it. 

Video DRM solutions protect your content by keeping the encryption key for the content safe. Usually, even with strong encryption, videos were easily downloaded by various tools, as they were able to identify the key and used it to download the videos. With DRM, you can’t access the key as it is hidden in a BlackBox setup called CDM.

Widevine DRM Security Levels: L1, L2, L3

Google Widevine DRM provides three security levels based on either the security used on hardware or software level. The three levels are Widevine L1, L2 & L3.

Before I go further into the security levels, it is important to know about TEE or Trusted Execution Environment, and how it is related to security levels. What TEE essentially does is that it makes sure that either of the decryption keys and decryption videos remains protected and can’t be stolen.

Widevine DRM security levels

Widevine L1

Widevine L1 is the highest level of security in Widevine. Here the security is at the hardware level. Most modern Android devices support Widevine L1 but still, there are a considerable number of devices with L3 security.

Many movie platforms like Netflix purposefully restrict full HD playback to only L1 devices. This is due to the fact that L1 devices can block screen capture with 100% security in mobile apps. 

Though this decision of basing the quality of video on Widevine security level, is a sole choice of platform/content provider and there are no compulsory rules around it. Many other movie platforms and course video websites/apps provide HD playback in all security levels.

For Widevine L1, TEE does all the video decryption, decoding, and processing.

Widevine L1 uses hardware-based security features and trusted execution environments (TEE) to ensure the highest level of security against unauthorized access and content piracy.

Devices that support Widevine L1 have specialized security hardware that enables the decryption and playback of encrypted content within a secure environment. 

This makes it extremely challenging for hackers and unauthorized parties to intercept or tamper with the protected content.

This is why, Widevine L1 is being widely used to stream premium content.

Widevine L2

In Widevine L2 only video decryption happens in TEE, while video processing happens out of TEE. 

Widevine L2 is not used for mobile devices. 

Widevine L3

Widevine L3 is the first level of Widevine security. L3 Devices don’t have TEE, and the protection here is only software-based. Many old phones, especially budget phones have L3. 

It provides a moderate level of protection and is usually there on lower-end devices. Standard-definition content is usually streamed on devices using Widevine L3. Although being the least secure Widevine version, it does provide some encryption and content protection

Widevine L3 is usually available on mid-range and lower-end smartphones, older smart TVs, and other budget-friendly devices and is available to a broader audience. But with its lower security, it can be susceptible to various vulnerabilities and attacks as it lacks the hardware-backed security features of Widevine L1.  

This is why in order to address this vulnerability, content platforms usually stream their higher-quality content on Widevine L2 or Widevine L1 devices.

Widevine L1 vs L3: Difference between the two Widevine security levels

The major differences between Widevine L1 and Widevine L3 is the security and content protection they offer.

    •  Widevine L1 is the highest security level.
    • Robust encryption and hardware-based security measures 
    • L1 is designed for devices that have trusted execution environments (TEE) 
  • Widevine L3: 
    • Widevine L3 is the lowest security level among the Widevine options.

  • Device Compatibility:
    • Widevine L1: 
      •  Widevine L1 is supported on higher-end devices with dedicated security hardware like premium smartphones, smart TVs, and certain streaming devices. 
    • Widevine L3: 
      • Widevine L3 is more widely compatible with various devices, including mid-range and lower-end smartphones, older smart TVs, and other budget-friendly devices. 
      • It can operate on a broader range of hardware since it doesn’t require specialized security hardware like Widevine L1.
  • Content Resolution:
    • Widevine L1: 
      • Widevine L1 enables the playback of high-definition (HD) and 4K content with full resolution and quality.
    • Widevine L3:
        • Widevine L3 is suitable for protecting standard-definition (SD) content and lower-quality media streams.

Now that we’ve gone through the security levels and know what devices support which level of security. Let’s take a look at the overall compatibility of Widevine DRM with other devices. These are the devices that support Widevine DRM playback.

There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes when you click ‘play’ on a video and when you are finally able to see it. 

In Widevine DRM, secure decryption is done via a series of exchanges between the Content Decryption Module and the Widevine DRM license server.  The HTML5 video player acts as a mediator for these exchanges. Although, by itself, the player cannot read the encrypted license or video.

These are the following steps that take place to decrypt a video for playback:

1. Video is received from the CDN or Content Delivery Network 

When you press the ‘play button, at first your browser’s media engine will identify whether the video is encrypted or not. After identifying it, ‘initData’ or initialization data is taken by the browser and is sent to your player.

2. Data is passed to the CDM or Content Decryption Module

After this, your video player sends the data to CDM.

3. Player receives the license request from CDM

After receiving the data from the player, CDM creates a license request and then passes the license back to the player

4. Widevine License server receives the request from the player

In the next step, the Widevine license server receives the license request from your video player.. 

5. Player receives the license from server

Upon receiving the request, the license server sends the Widevine license to the video player through an encrypted message.

6. CDM receives the license from the player

The Player then sends the license to  CDM

7. OEMCrypto Module receives the data from CDM

The OEMCrypto module then receives the data from CDM and the actual decryption happens.

8. Video player receives the video chunks from OEMCrypto Module

After the video is decrypted and decoded, it is then sent to your video player in small chunks. The viewer is able to play the video and security is also ensured. And voila, you get video playback on your device.

How Do The Widevine DRM Components Flow Together As A Platform?

Widevine’s DRM components work together with each other in order to provide you with an end to end solution for protecting your video content. It includes all the tools right from the content preparation stage to streaming it on any device. 

The Widevine DRM component flow starts with preparing your videos with Shaka packager for adaptive bitrate streaming. Once the videos in different quality are prepared,they are encrypted with license and are stored in the widevine license server. 

On a later stage, widevine drm license server gives the license info to the video player, whenever the encrypted video is streamed to the player via CDN.

Encrypted video is then sent to the device’s CDM( Content Decryption module), which enables the secure video playback with OEMCrypto Module.

 How does Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Work In Widevine DRM?

In the below image you will see how different segments of video play at different time based on the current bandwidth of the users. If the current bandwidth of the user is low, a chunk with lower quality will stream and as the bandwidth improves a better quality segment will be streamed. Yellow chunks are the videon chunk being played based on the bandwidth detected.

Highest Quality Adaptive Streaming with DASH

  • VdoCipher’s implementation of Widevine also makes use of the DASH streaming protocol. It is an open-source and widely adopted video streaming standard.  DASH ensures that the same video file can be used across all devices (with the exception of iPhone). This considerably reduces the storage requirements on Server/Content Delivery Network, as they only need to store one file container that would stream on most devices.
  • The most valuable aspect of DASH protocol is adaptive playback,  to stream the best quality for given network bandwidth. In the urban locations where users watch videos, the network connections can often fluctuate wildly. This can be because the viewer may be watching while traveling, or that more people are logging in to the shared network at the same time. VdoCipher video player monitors the user’s network quality. Then it streams the best possible resolution for that given network quality.
  • DASH is also used for streaming via HTTP, which is not blocked by firewalls, which is the case for streaming formats such as RTMP.

Encrypted Streaming + DRM License 

Video Encoding at multiple bitrates

As mentioned in the previous section, video streaming in urban networks requires adaptive bitrate streaming. The video encoding process optimizes the video size to deliver the highest quality at the lowest bitrate. The most popular video codecs in use today are H.264 and VP9. SD resolution streams are encoded using H.264 codec, which has the widest decoder support. On the other hand, HD resolution streams are encoded using VP9. This is done for the delivery of 1080p streams to devices such as Android TV. As of February 2018, hardware-level decryption for Widevine-encrypted streams are available for Smart TVs by the following device makers: LG (WebOS), Panasonic (FirefoxOS), Philips (AndroidTV), Samsung (Tizen), Sharp Aquos (AndroidTV), Sony Bravia (AndroidTV. Different files of different bitrate and resolutions are broken down into fragmented MP4 segments of equal length.

In Widevine DRM each individual video track is separately encrypted, using CENC (Common encryption Scheme). CENC ensures that each video segment is encrypted only once. The keys can be reused by different supporting DRMs (such as Playready). Fairplay has not yet made this API available, thus Fairplay streams have to be separately encoded currently.

On packaging and encrypting the video, the VdoCipher packager requests for content decryption keys from the Widevine DRM license server. Widevine DRM license server subsequently returns this data to VdoCipher.

The information regarding the encryption/ decryption key is then inserted to the Media Presentation Description (MPD). This information can only be understood by the black-boxed Content Decryption module inside the browser/ device.  It uses the info to prepare a  DRM license request from the Widevine license server.

Make Highly Specific DRM Licenses with VdoCipher

Using VdoCipher’s  Widevine DRM architecture, you can create highly specific DRM licenses at the time of video upload. For instance, you can limit HD Streaming only to devices that support L1 video decryption (wherein decryption and decoding are both hardware-based). You can limit devices having L3 security (Widevine CDM is limited to browser) to only SD playback. Hollywood studios and DECE often require streaming services to follow this policy, giving higher priority of security for HD video content.

Licenses also enable you to have a rental model in addition to a transaction video-on-demand model. Most Electronic Sell-Through platforms such as iTunes and Google Play Movies enable their users to either rent films for a period of time or purchase the license outright for unlimited viewings. Options to rent films tend to limit users to only view the film within a period of 48 hours from first starting playback. VdoCipher’s implementation of a DRM license enables you to customize for how long a license is valid once it has been served for the first time.

Encrypted Video Playback with DRM License

Videos are decrypted securely in the device by Widevine CDM with an encrypted license from the DRM license server

VdoCipher player acts as a blind messenger between the Widevine DRM license server and the Content Decryption Module (CDM) (which is either hardware-based or software-based). The VdoCipher player itself does not handle any license keys at any point directly.  It gets access to the final video stream when the CDM decrypts the stream for playback. In Desktops, CDM is bundled along with browsers.  In Android phones, the CDM is part of the hardware creating a Trusted Execution Environment. Note that whether software-based or hardware-based, the Content Decryption Module is closed-source.  The video player does not know how the CDM decrypts the key. It only uses the APIs which the Widevine CDM makes available for requesting & receiving the DRM license keys.

Android Devices have the highest level of security with Encryption, Screen Capture disabled

Using the Trusted Execution Environment in Android Devices, videos are decrypted and decoded in the trusted zone of the hardware.  It only then plays on the screen. The upshot of this is that Android devices, through client apps and websites,  are protected against screen capture. Screen Capture does not work while the video is playing in android chrome or the android app.

You can rest assured that if Hollywood studios, what with their multi-million dollar deals for films with online streaming services, trust a DRM solution, they would have done their due diligence on the security of the DRM. Widevine is the service that Netflix uses for its encrypted content.

Broadly speaking, Hollywood studios limit video playback at a resolution of 720p for Widevine’s L3 profile. In the L3 profile, the decryption is software-based, and the final video is rendered by the video player itself. Studios limit HD and Ultra-HD resolutions for devices that support L1 profile, which provides hardware-based decryption, decoding, and rendering. Shaka HTML5 Video player

WIth Widevine DRM you get the Shaka video player, for any platform which supports htm5. Shaka player ensures secure video playback online. Shaka player is an open-source js video player. It binds the Video Element and Widevine CDM by consuming the EME API. VdoCipher already contains a pre-integrated Shaka player in its product. 

Android player for Widevine DRM

You can develop your own native Android player using the Java Platform APIs or a web application using HTML5 and JavaScript APIs. MPEG DASH and CENC are open standards that the Android player supports. VdoCipher APIS and SDK already include DRM solution + video player for integration in Android apps.

Media Source Extensions (MSE)

The OEMCrypto Module decrypts the content using information passed to it from the Player (and the License Server). Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) uses the Common Encryption format as part of the Widevine DRM end-to-end security protocol, making sure that your video can’t be downloaded. Being a W3C recommended standard, the streaming application can be used across different browser engines regardless of the DRM system in use. 

Widevine DRM Compatibility

Widevine DRM is not compatible across all devices and browsers. In fact, every DRM service has some restrictions on compatibility. Google Widevine DRM is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Edge browsers on Desktop and Android, Chromecast, Android TV. Android phone devices come with 2 levels of Google Widevine DRM security- Level L1 & Level L3. L1 devices are compatible with higher security features than L3.
